What you need to get started

What do you need to get started. Obviously a camera. Picking the right camera can be very mind numbing for the first timer. In this post I will give you guys some helpful tips into making that decision a tad bit easier. This blog is for the film-maker, like me thats on a budget, therefore money will be the main factor into all of the decisions when making relevant posts to camera equipment, lens and etc. For the Record I am a Canon guy so 99.9% of my posts about cameras in general will be canon related.  The tips and tricks for editing will be much more generalized as those can be applied with nearly all NLE's(Non-linear Editors) such as Adobe Premier(my weapon of choice), Final Cut and etc. I will aslo post a GREAT example of each camera video capability. Posting the best examples shows you what the cameras maximum capabilities are. (I will not get into extreme detail about each camera)

Cameras

This day and age you can find a pretty decent camera in cellphones. I have seen videos of documentaries and scenes from movies shot on iPhone's. For the time being we are gone leave those out. Now, if you are on a budget the most logical reason would be to find a camera with the best specs for the right amount of money. Here are 3 of the BEST cameras out there, that when learned properly can produce amazing results.

Canon T2i

There are many cameras in the Canon Rebel series (T2i,T3i,T4i) but since you are on a budget we are gone to stick with the cheapest camera that will give you amazing results. This is where the Canon T2i comes into play. I started out with a Canon T1i so the Canon T2i is a major upgrade from that. It shoots Full Hi-Definition video @ 1080p and aslo shoots HD video @ 720p. The BEST bang for your buck. Here is a great video example of the capabilities of the Canon T2i and the Stock 18-55 lens that comes with the kit.

Canon 60d

I debated between the Canon 60d and the Canon 7d at the #2 spot. They are both GREAT cameras. Both have can be found for great deals. The canon 7d has a couple advantages over the 60d but as far as video quality goes, its non existent. I picked the 60d because of 3 reasons. The swivel screen, cheaper memory cards(60d use sd memory cards) and Its cheaper(Duh!). You can get a Canon 60d Kit(camera body + lens) for nearly the price of a 7d body. Here is a great video example of the capabilities of the Canon 60d and the stock 18-135 lens that comes with the kit.

Canon 5d Mark II

Last but not least is the Canon 5d Mark II. The mark 3 is out now but the canon 5d Mark II can still hold its weight. Its a full frame camera that has top of the line video quality. You can find the Canon 5d Mark II on ebay for great deal. I currently own the Canon 5d Mark II and must say its one of the best cameras i have own. The ONLY downfall to the Canon 5d Mark II is that there is no 720p @ 60fps mode. It shoots only 1080p. Here is an example of the Canon 5d Mark II camera.
